Pop Sugar Reading Challenge 2019

PS18_2019_ReadingChallenge_PinterestIn the hopes of being able to make myself read in diverse genres, I joined the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge.

This is my first time in joining a challenge with different prompts! It’s been fun, so far. While joining this challenge, I hope I could make my Goodreads Reading Challenge a success as well. My goal is to read 25 books this year. I decided to do a blog post about it, so that I could track (other than Goodreads) the books I read for this challenge. Short reviews and ratings will also be included.

☆☆☆

77203A book with at least one million ratings on Goodreads:

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini – ★★★★★

Definitely a page-turner for me. Such a heartbreaking novel that I hoped the author would give me a happy ending, at least. He gave me that, but only after chapters of injustice, death and sad emotion. It deserves the high rating it has on Goodreads and I’d like to recommend this book to all of you.

39939417A book becoming a movie in 2019:

Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott – ★★★★★

Thank goodness for the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge, I had the chance to read this one before it hits the movie theaters. Also, I’m a sucker for pretty book covers. I totally enjoyed reading this. I also became aware of Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder, and I had to read articles about it to know more. The ending of the movie was a little cliffhanger for me, but I still liked it.

36199084A book by an author whose first and last names start with the same letter:

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang – ★★★

I picked this book because I read good reviews about it on Twitter and it so happens the first and last names of the author starts with the same letter. However, it’s really something I didn’t enjoy. I’d still like to congratulate the author, though, for winning the Goodreads Choice Award 2018 as Best Romance.

31981485

A book with two-word title:

Accidental Proposal by Kenadee Bryant – ★★

I found it cheesy and cliché. After reading, all I said was, “Okayyyy. Let’s move on to another book.” There were things I got annoyed with the book – with how the characters act or some of the scenes. There were typo errors as well. The ending made me wonder a little about what will happen in the second and third book, but my guess would be that they finally fell in love for real and got married.

#toots A book told from multiple character POVs:

#toots by Linh Le James – ★★★★

This book is hilarious! I was entertained with everything that’s happening to the four sisters. With having my own three sisters, too bad, our lives aren’t these eventful like the girls on the book. Haha! Also, how nice that the author includes cocktail recipes in every chapter. If you like romantic comedies, this is perfect for you.

pachinko A book about a family:

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee – ★★★★★

A novel about the four generations of a Korean family living in Japan. Another page-turner! I’m not a fast reader but I was able to finish this book in seven days (that’s short for me. 😀 ) given how long this novel is. I am so amazed by how great this book was written. With all the twists happening to the family, I sometimes find myself pausing from reading. This is a must-read. It deserves the high rating it has on Goodreads.

38746485 A book you meant to read in 2018:

Becoming by Michelle Obama – ★★★★★

I only know Michelle Obama through what I see on TV and read on the internet. Only after reading her memoir that I learned more things about her.

After reading Becoming, I’m fully convinced that she really is an inspiring and powerful woman and as a mother. I loved the book. It gave me so many emotions; sometimes I’d catch myself swoon over their love story, cry as she recalls the school shootings, or laugh with some silly things they did. I was deeply moved by her. I love how she promotes hope and inspires so many people. She used her influence in so many positive ways. I admire and respect her a lot.

This is one of the books, I think, everyone should make time to read. I’ve been meaning to read it last year, but never had the chance.

I love reading and through this challenge, I get to read books I haven’t really thought of reading, I’d get to learn more and I noticed I haven’t been mindlessly scrolling on Instagram. Haha!

Are you joining in any reading challenge? What book have you been loving? ♥

I will update this blog post with more books again soon. Watch out for it. 🙂

  1. I really love the PopSugar Challenge! It’s my second year following it and I always enjoy the diversity of the prompts, although I only use it as a rough guide for what I read (mostly when I’m stuck on where to go!). I’m looking forward to seeing what you read!
